We all know political campaigns tend to get dirty but surely very few of us would think it's acceptable for that to include racism or islamophobia. Our first piece today suggests that recent attacks on Sadiq Khan, which have tried to suggest he has links to extremism, are based on very little evidence and are more about a dog-whistle campaign to inflame islamophobic feelings towards the Labour candidate for mayor of London. Elsewhere we bring you the disturbing news of the death of a detainee at the Colnebrook immigration detention centre. The man, who was under "constant suicide watch", was found "unresponsive in his room" yesterday. This comes a month after the Shaw review concluded that numbers in detention should be reduced "for reasons of welfare". And, we report that the court of appeal has ruled that government changes to legal aid in domestic violence cases, is flawed. Campaigners have previously warned that the changes have led to victims being denied justice. |
