Jeremy Corbyn heading for landslide victory

"One may know how to gain a victory, and know not how to use it" - Pedro Calderon de la Barca

With a new poll suggesting Jeremy Corbyn is on course for a landslide victory over Owen Smith, our first piece today takes a closer look at the findings of the poll and asks what's next for Labour. Could there be a second leadership challenge or is the party now heading for a split?

Brexiters often try to squash criticism of their case for leaving the EU as unpatriotic or as "doing Britain down" but our next piece argues that it is often those who shout the loudest about their love of country who end up causing it the most harm. It suggests that Britain is now the political laughing stock of the world and that it's the self-proclaimed "patriots" who turned us into a joke.

The Brexit censorship campaign

"You have not converted a man because you have silenced him" - John Morley
View this email in your browser

The EU referendum may have taken place more than two months ago but there is still so much to be decided that an ongoing debate over the type of Brexit we want is crucial. But our first piece today suggests that those who still believe in Remain are being told to shut up. This piece examines the three common techniques used to shut down the debate.

Next up we look at the government's 'pay to stay' plans where social housing tenants earning over a certain amount will face a rent hike. This piece suggests that the policy is a disincentive for people to succeed at work and that it amounts to little more than another way to punish those living in housing association or council owned properties.

"Voters don't decide issues, they decide who will decide issues." - George Will

It might have seemed like the only stories over the last few days were about Jeremy Corbyn's train journey but our most-read list this week shows that there were plenty of other issues to catch your attention. In the newsletter today we have:

  • A piece which suggested that Nigel Farage's endorsement of Donald Trump shows his true colours.
  • An article which looked at the reaction to Sadiq Khan's support of Owen Smith
  • A piece which suggested it wasn't The Sun that got a SAS soldier released from prison.
  • A report on comments made by Owen Smith on immigration
  • And our most-read item that looked at Labour's response to Brexit
