Cameron's prisons shame

In the time that David Cameron has been prime minister the prison system has massively deteriorated. Despite the number of inmates soaring, prison budgets have still been cut. And outcomes are worse than they've been for a decade, with a recent report from the prison inspector stating that "You were more likely to die in prison than five years ago".

So it's a little surprising that the prime minister decided to announce today that prisons are "scandalous" and should "shame us all", as if he has played no part in their decline. Today we look back at what has gone wrong in the prison service over the last five years, and what Cameron needs to do if he is serious about reform.
