Hope for those trapped in the Calais migrant camp

"History has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own." - Michelle Obama

As the weather worsens, the conditions in the Calais migrant camp are deteriorating rapidly. But our first piece this morning explains how an ongoing legal challenge could bring some hope to the people trapped there.

Elsewhere, we have a piece which looks at last week's legal victory for the parents and children who challenged the government over the exclusion of non-religious worldviews from the school curriculum. The chief executive of the the Religious Education Council welcomes the ruling and says a wide range of faiths and beliefs must be studied.

The weekend is almost here so we've rounded up our most-read items of the last seven days for you to enjoy at your leisure.

Here's what we have for you this week:

  • An article which highlighted the tricks the chancellor uses to evade scrutiny.
  • A story about comments made by Zac Goldsmith which suggested he would scrap bus lanes in London if he becomes mayor.
  • A response to the Spending review from Green leader Natalie Bennett.
  • And our most-read piece of the week which is on the outrage over the Christian ad ban which never existed in the first place.

Does the anti-war left realise war already started?

"Good questions outrank easy answers." - Paul Samuelson
View this email in your browser

As the arguments for and against intervention in Syria rumble on, our first piece today suggests there is no morally correct solution. Civilians are already dying and will continue to do so whether or not the UK steps in. Perhaps the one thing we can be sure of is that neither side can claim the moral high ground.

Our next piece is by the associate Europe director of Human Rights Watch. Based on her experience of working with rescue boats in the Med, she provides a clear plan for what the EU should be doing to prevent more deaths of refugees. She says we must not become inured to the news of children dying in our seas.
