The government doesn't care about the impact of sanctions: they want them to hurt

"I believe a modern welfare system, fit for the world of work in the 21st century, is one that is relentlessly focussed on helping people into work, equally relentlessly focussed on fairness" - Damian Green

Our first piece today takes a look at a damning new report into the use of welfare sanctions and suggests that the government is not interested in listening to warnings about how damaging it can be to stop a claimant's money.

Elsewhere, we have an article which argues that while the radical left's response to Fidel Castro's death has been depressingly predictable there are lessons to learn from El Jefe.

If the Brexit note is accurate, we're in serious trouble

"My policy on cake is pro having it and pro eating it." - Boris Johnson

View this email in your browser

What can we take from yesterday's shot of the Brexit notes carried by the aide to Tory vice-chair Mark Field? Our first piece today suggests that while we can't know for sure if they are an accurate description of government policy, they do tally perfectly with what we know of the reality on the ground and the government's negotiating aims. It warns that if they are accurate, we could be in very serious trouble.

Elsewhere, we hear from a new British group set up to raise awareness about the threat posed to women's reproductive rights in the US, since Donald Trump's victory. UK Friends of Planned Parenthood says this is the beginning of what they hope will be a movement that sees women across the UK and the world fight for the universality of a woman's right to choose.

The extreme right-wing views of new Ukip leader Paul Nuttall

"I would argue that the very existence of the NHS stifles competition" - Paul Nuttall
View this email in your browser

Ukip's new leader Paul Nuttall has been labeled a "major threat" to Labour's core vote but who is Nuttall and what does he really believe? Our first piece today looks at some of his positions as set out on his website and personal statements he has made over the years.

Elsewhere, we have a piece which suggests the government's new porn bill is ill-thought-out and could leave millions of people at risk of data leaks and fraud.

And, we have an article which looks at the Richmond by-election and suggests that a Lib Dem win could force the government to make concessions on Brexit.
