Pick of the week: Sewel 'scandal', cannabis and turmoil at the Home Office

The weekend is almost here so we've selected our top five stories for you to enjoy. This is what we've got for you this week:
  • News that the police commissioner for Durham has decided to no longer make the cultivation of cannabis a priority for his force. We ask if this could lead to real cannabis reform.
  • With Michael Gove needing to make massive cuts to his department, there must be a temptation to privatise certain prison services. But statistics show that private prisons actually cost more to run than public sector prisons.
  • Two pieces about the Lord Sewel 'scandal'. Is it really any of our business what he gets up to in his spare time?
  • And a court of appeal decision which has thrown the government's asylum processing system into turmoil.
Have a great weekend.

Where is the outrage over Britain's Sandra Blands

"We're not anti-police...we're anti-police brutality." - Al Sharpton

The death of Sandra Bland while in police custody in the US has hit the headlines in this country too. But why is there no outrage over our own black deaths in custody? Research from the Institute of Race Relations shows 509 BAME people have died in suspicious circumstances in custody since 1991.

Elsewhere, we hear from Green MEP Keith Taylor about the situation in Calais. He says now more than ever the UK needs to work  within a European-wide framework to ensure those in need of asylum are able to find it and at the same time address issues such as climate change and poverty.

And finally, the psychoactive substances bill is not even law yet but Lambeth council is imposing a ban on substances with a capacity to stimulate or depress the central nervous system. Which we know includes almost anything. Just how enforceable this will be is anyone's guess.

Prison crisis revelaed

"No one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails." - Nelson Mandela
View this email in your browser
New government statistics published today have revealed a shocking increase in assaults and murders inside prisons. The figures appear to bear out the concerns of many that the combination of higher numbers of inmates and reduced staffing levels are causing a crisis in the prison service.

Staying on the subject of prisons, we hear from a former prisoner who is warning that a possible smoking ban in prisons would be hell for inmates and staff.

And elsewhere, we take a look at a decision by a police commissioner in Durham to no longer make cultivation of cannabis a priority for his force. With a number of other areas now indicating they may follow suit, could police commissioners be the key to cannabis reform?
