Corbyn has brought party conference back to life

"Things move very slowly in politics. We seem to fight the same wars over and over again." - Pete du Pont

Today we bring you the latest from the Labour party conference in Brighton.

We have our analysis of Jeremy Corbyn's speech from yesterday. There were flickers of political ingenuity but we found it to be lacking in ambition and showed that the new leader was not interested in reaching people outside of the hall. Despite this, Corbyn has managed to bring party conference back to life. There is full political debate everywhere you look and an energy that hasn't been seen since the early days of Tony Blair.

We also report on comments made by the Labour MP for Bassetlaw, John Mann, in which he suggested the party would be 'out of touch for a generation' if it doesn't change its immigration policy. Speaking at a conference event last night, Mann said white working class voters and trade unionists were deserting Labour for Ukip.

Finally, we hear from the Labour MP, Anna Turley, on the impact the mothballing of the Redcar steelworks will have on local people. She asks why if David Cameron really believes in the "northern powerhouse" he has abandoned the Teesside steelworkers.

Labour to support all strikes

"If there is no struggle, there is no progress." - Frederick Douglass

This morning we bring you more news from the Labour party conference where Jeremy Corbyn is preparing to give his keynote speech this afternoon.

John McDonnell told a conference fringe meeting last night that the party will now automatically support all strikes taken by trade unions, saying it needed to become a "resistance movement."

He also made his first major speech as shadow chancellor yesterday. The left-wing firebrand took a calmer and more consensual approach than he has in the past. But can he and Corbyn really do enough to challenge the Tory narrative that they are a threat to the country's economic and national security?

Elsewhere, we hear from the cannabis law reform campaign, Clear, who have been lobbying MPs ahead of a cannabis debate in parliament next month. They say the responses they have received show how little some politicians understand the issue.

Corbyn backer calls for Mandelson to be expelled

"There is no act of treachery or meanness of which a political party is not capable." - Benjamin Disraeli
View this email in your browser

This morning we bring you the latest from the Labour party conference where things haven't got off to a very harmonious start.

We have the news that one of Jeremy Corbyn's leading parliamentary backers, Michael Meacher has said that Peter Mandelson's attacks on the new leader are "close to traitorous" and should lead to his potential expulsion from the party.

And we look at Corbyn's conference defeat on Trident. Britain is now likely to have a continuous at-sea nuclear weapon until the 2040s but in doing so are we actually breaking international law?

Elsewhere, we hear from the chief executive of the homeless charity Crisis. With recent government figures showing homelessness is on the rise, he makes a social and economical argument for why the government must act now to tackle this.
