  • A piece which looked at Rachel Reeves comments about hate attacks
  • An article which praised Corbyn's decision to reject calls for Labour to be tougher on immigration
  • A piece which suggested that the Momentum conference should give the left hope
  • A report on calls from the Unite chief of staff for the British media to be taken over and defeated.
  • And our most-read piece which suggested that Liam Fox's speech to the WTO shows he has no Brexit plan.

Councils to be allowed to opt out of child protection laws

"I think we have a moral obligation to our children that can be easily summarised: number one, protect them from harm." - Tom Allen

Today we lead with a piece from the human rights organisation Liberty. They highlight how the government's new Children and Social Work Bill will allow councils to opt out of child protection laws. The changes will affect more than eight decades of legislation, some of which was created in response to cases like that of Victoria Climbie and Baby P.

Now Liberty and 39 other organisations have come together to call on the government to rethink the "dangerous" plans.

Momentum conference should give the left optimism

"Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." - Helen Keller
View this email in your browser

There's been plenty of reasons for those on the left to feel gloomy about politics lately, but our first piece today suggests that the recent Momentum conference should give them optimism. It finds that the younger activists were engaged and well organised and that it is in their hands that the fate of the new Labour party looks increasingly likely to rest.

Elsewhere, we have a piece which looks at the anti-begging posters which have been banned by the advertising watchdog for "reinforcing negative stereotypes" of vulnerable people. It suggests that the campaign by Nottingham City council to encourage people not to give money to beggars, is part of a wider shift to demonise society's most vulnerable people.
