Labour pains

After a dramtic month in politics, things have finally started to calm down a bit. As our five most-read articles this week have shown, the Labour leadership race has dominated. In our newsletter this week we have:

  • A piece looking at an experiment in drug decriminalisation.
  • A piece arguing that Labour MPs must get behind their current leader
  • Our run-down of the Brexit challenges facing Theresa May
  • A look at the real story behind one of this week's big Corbyn controversies
  • And our most-read piece is our report on Owen Smith's comments about immigration

A coup that never was

"Sure there are dishonest men in local government. But there are dishonest men in national government too." - Richard Nixon

A Corbynite coup?

The Labour leadership race has led to a series of claims and counter claims about the two warring factions within the party. One such story about a botched local by-election in Totnes led to claims that Corbyn 'entryists' had cost Labour their only place on the council there. But was it actually true? Our first piece by a member of the local party, suggests all may not have been as it first seemed.

Our second piece is by the people behind a remarkable experiment in decriminalising drugs. Organisers of the Secret Garden festival worked with police and local authorities to allow drugs workers to test substances submitted by festival-goers for toxic and harmful ingredients. Could this project point towards a new direction for drugs policy in the UK?

Owen Smith's woman problem

"It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt" - Maurice Switzer

Smith's women problem

For a candidate running as the 'competent' alternative to Jeremy Corbyn, Owen Smith is developing a worrying habit of putting his foot in his mouth. His comments today about wanting to "smash" Theresa May "back on her heels" are the latest in a series of gaffes and controversies about Smith's attitude to women and comes at a time when Labour are under attack for their continuing reluctance to elect a female leader.

The launch of Smith's campaign has not gone entirely to plan so far but he has acquired a lot of strong supporters. Writing for Politics.co.uk today, former Northern Ireland secretary Paul Murphy explains why he is backing Smith to be Labour's next leader.
