Ukip's Britain - Politics.co.uk

"We want our country back." - Nigel Farage

Two nations

It is no accident that Nigel Farage uses the language of the American Tea Party. Like their US counterparts, Ukip see themselves as the true owners of the country, forced to the fringes by a metropolitan elite who have betrayed them. Farage's declaration today that 'we want out country back' was meant quite literally. It is a declaration of war against those who he believes have stolen his country from him.

The contrast between Ukip's manifesto launch today in a Thurrock hotel and the Liberal Democrats manifesto launch in a trendy South London bar could not have been more stark. The locations were both chosen to say something about the two parties, one of which is comfortable with modern Britain and one which is clearly not.

The Lib Dems were also keen today to show that they have changed. But in their transition from party of protest to party of government, there are signs that they may have lost some of their core principles.
