The Afghan deportations

"When I go to Afghanistan, I realise I've been spared , due to a random genetic lottery, by being born to people who had the means to get out. Every time I go to Afghanistan I am haunted by that" – Khaled Hosseini

A rare moment of calm in the election today, with the rush of manifestos temporarily over and just the opposition debate tonight to look forward to. Thorough polls on manifestos won't really be available until the weekend - that's when there'll be an end to the poll deadlock, if there ever is. For now, the only evidence is a poll suggesting the Tories lost out. Their manifesto policies - even the much-touted Right to Buy policy, don't seem to have chimed with voters. Meanwhile, we have a bit of news - real actual non-election news - about the government's deportation programme to Afghanistan. That could well be coming to an end soon, given the sudden deterioration in the country. But before that happens, the Home Office appears intent on sending out another charter flight of deportations.
