Panic stations

Is there a whiff of panic in the air? That's the undeniable impression coming from the Conservative party camp as we enter the final four weeks of the general election campaign. Once a rigidly ordered and even monotonously predictable machine, the Tory campaign is increasingly looking rattled and erratic as new polls show them failing to break through against Labour and a surprisingly resilient Ed Miliband. But while things are looking bad for the Tories in England, the continued collapse of Labour in Scotland could yet save them. A new post leaders debate poll shows the SNP polling at a new high, with Jim Murphy judged to have come a poor third behind the SNP and the Tories in Tuesday's showdown. Taken together, the election looks increasingly difficult to call, with bookies today reducing their odds on Ed Miliband being the next prime minister to evens. Most Conservative politicians used to laugh at the prospect of the Labour leader entering Downing Street. That amusement is rapidly turning to panic.
