The EU's moral failure

"We live in the age of the refugee, the age of the exile" – Ariel Dorfman

The migrant boat tragedy is throwing a very harsh light on the priorities of the UK and the EU. In the tail end of last year, the UK struck out against search-and-rescue operations in the Med, arguing that it they were encouraging people to get on the boats. The falsehood of that argument is now obvious, but at a terrible price. News emerged overnight that up to 800 people may have drowned in the latest tragedy. The EU's response has won few allies. At its heart is a concern for security over humanitarianism. As Green MEP Jean Lambert writes for us today, the reality of British and European rhetoric on immigration can be seen in the corpses at the bottom of the sea we usually holiday in. Thursday sees another EU meeting on how to deal with the tragedy. Let's hope it's more productive than the one yesterday.
