Another day, another manufactured outrage. Senior Tories started briefing against Ed Miliband's foreign policy speech as soon as extracts were released. A section on how poor post-war planning in Libya led to the tragedy of the migrant boats was twisted to suggest the Labour leader was accusing David Cameron of murder. It was a nonsense of course, but it was dutifully reported by most news outlets. The speech itself, on hard-headed multilateralism, was not particularly impressive. Miliband struggled to credibly put across a statesmanlike image, given he has rarely touched upon the subject of foreign policy before. We assess the government's real culpability in the migrant boat deaths and Miliband's poor record on foreign policy in general. In other news, we look at the forgotten responsibility for victims in the wake of Chris Grayling's probation service sell-off. | |
