In the run up to the 2015 general election, it wasn't unusual to hear those on the left in England praising Nicola Sturgeon. Her slick performances on the TV leaders' debates impressed viewers and many believed her to be all about fairness and tackling inequality. But our first piece today suggests the conditions some of her own constituents live in, show the reality of a SNP government is quite different from the idealistic rhetoric. Next up, we have a piece which suggests that even Jeremy Corbyn's ex-wife coming out in support of Owen Smith won't be enough to change the now almost inevitable outcome of the leadership contest. It argues that Smith's campaign has been far from impressive and that after months of campaigning, most of those still backing Smith appear to do so more out of antipathy towards Corbyn than any obvious great enthusiasm for his rival. And finally, there are some people who believe that being in prison is a bit like a holiday camp. But today, we hear from a former prisoner about what life is really like behind bars. He argues that until politicians really understand what goes on, any talk of reform is pointless. |
