Momentum conference should give the left optimism

"Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." - Helen Keller

There's been plenty of reasons for those on the left to feel gloomy about politics lately, but our first piece today suggests that the recent Momentum conference should give them optimism. It finds that the younger activists were engaged and well organised and that it is in their hands that the fate of the new Labour party looks increasingly likely to rest.

Elsewhere, we have a piece which looks at the anti-begging posters which have been banned by the advertising watchdog for "reinforcing negative stereotypes" of vulnerable people. It suggests that the campaign by Nottingham City council to encourage people not to give money to beggars, is part of a wider shift to demonise society's most vulnerable people.
