Labour surrender

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn today took part in the first televised leadership hustings with his rival Owen Smith. It was hardly a clash of the titans. Both men ran into difficulty and failed to impress the Politics.co.uk team. However, it was a question about whether or not the two men would negotiate with Isis that has caused the biggest controversy of the day. Our first piece judges that the two men's equivocation on negotiating with such a vile terrorist group shows the depths to which pacifism has taken Labour and the left.

The BBC's audience of Labour members and supporters were divided equally between Smith backers, Corbyn supporters and the undecided. By the end, the vast majority of the undecided had switched over to the Corbyn camp. Our review of the debate concludes that while the Labour leader demonstrated his weaknesses today, they are not weaknesses that his current rival seems able or willing to exploit.
