Last week we ran a piece highlighting the draconian use of Public Space Protection Orders by local councils. We heard how local authorities were banning or planning to ban things like sleeping in public, gathering in groups of more than two people, and swearing. Today we report on a number protests which took place over the weekend against the use of these orders and included people standing in pairs in Hillingdon, lying down in sleeping bags in Woking, and even a little bit of street theatre in Cambridge. Precarious contracts and low pay have become the norm for many people in the UK. This is particularly true for migrant workers and our next piece piece today warns that it could get worse if calls to 'control our borders' are used to further weaken their rights. It points to the recent controversy surrounding Sports Direct and Byron Burgers as examples of employees facing prejudice, abuse and exploitation. But there are some who are fighting back. In our next piece we hear from the United Voices of the World union who is fighting for better pay and conditions for its members. This piece looks at how low paid workers across London are coming together to fight back against big business. |
