Ken Loach's new film has caused huge controversy among those who support recent reforms of the welfare state. Some have claimed that the film exaggerates the experiences of those living at the mercy of benefit sanctions and the bedroom tax. However, our first piece today, written by somebody who has experienced many of the same struggles depicted in the film, Loach's vision was only too real.

Our second piece today looks at the decision yesterday by the home secretary Amber Rudd to oppose a formal inquiry into the battle of Orgreave. It argues that it is the perfect example of government ignoring the concerns of the working class.
