| It's hard to take your eyes of the news right now, almost every hour brings another significant story. This morning there were dramatic scenes in Brussels as the EU parliament met to discuss what happens after the referendum. And there's still plenty of drama unfolding in Westminster.
Our first piece today brings you an account of Labour's extremely tense PLP meeting last night and the gathering of Corbyn supporters outside. It's now clear that the Labour leader has no intention of leaving quietly and right now there are no signs that his supporters are turning on him. So what's next for his party? This piece suggests that if Corbyn continues to ignore the feelings of his own MPs we could see the end of Labour as we know it.
There's not just uncertainty within our political parties but also in the markets. Last night Standard and Poor stripped Britain of its AAA credit rating, down two notches to AA. So did Fitch Ratings, which downgraded the UK from AA+ to AA. Our next piece reports that a major contributing factor to this was the expected impact of a drop in immigration to the UK.
As the other parties have imploded, Nicola Sturgeon has been one of the only leaders to show any real leadership. But our final piece this morning suggests that the impact of Brexit may reinforce the fears around the risk of Scottish independence on the economy. It argues that if a second independence referendum is called now, Scottish nationalism could be killed off for a generation. |
