The whole country has been left stunned and saddened by the tragic killing of Jo Cox. The esteem in which the MP for Batley and Spen was held is evident from the many tributes which have been paid to her since the news broke. It's still unclear what the motive for the attack was but once the facts have been established anyone found to have played a role in her death must be held responsible. But our first piece today suggests that some politicians and the press must also take responsibility for the ugly direction the UK is going in. If we can take anything from such a terrible event it's perhaps that we should all be a little nicer to each. Our next item suggests that we now have an opportunity to take stock and look at how we are behaving. By encouraging a culture of respectful debate and consideration we can defeat the toxic suspicion which currently surrounds us. And elsewhere, we have a piece which looks at the coverage of the Euro 2016 troubles. It argues that the media were too quick to blame England fans and that we should be more careful about reinforcing negative stereotypes. |
