For someone who has only just decided to run in the Tory leadership race, Michael Gove gave a very long and detailed speech at the launch of his bid this morning. But with some big name MPs and even the Daily Mail coming out for Theresa May, it looks set to be a close-run contest. For all of the home secretary's strengths, our first article today suggests that some of her policies have not just been wrong, they've been dangerous and that the thought of her becoming the next prime minister should worry us all. As the turmoil within the Labour party continues, our next piece reports that a new poll shows that while Corbyn can be beaten, it's not likely to be by those who are currently plotting against him. Anyone hoping that Labour would be the party to oppose an end to the free movement of workers, looks set to be disappointed. In a speech this morning, shadow chancellor John McDonnell gave his clearest signal yet that Labour are unlikely to propose maintaining the unrestricted immigration currently seen within the single market. Neither Labour or the Tories have been clear about their future immigration and refugee policies. Our final piece today suggests that there is no magic wand to reduce refugee numbers and rather than imagining that the crisis will disappear after the referendum result, we should start thinking about what organisations in the UK can do to help. |
