Smith's women problem

For a candidate running as the 'competent' alternative to Jeremy Corbyn, Owen Smith is developing a worrying habit of putting his foot in his mouth. His comments today about wanting to "smash" Theresa May "back on her heels" are the latest in a series of gaffes and controversies about Smith's attitude to women and comes at a time when Labour are under attack for their continuing reluctance to elect a female leader.

The launch of Smith's campaign has not gone entirely to plan so far but he has acquired a lot of strong supporters. Writing for Politics.co.uk today, former Northern Ireland secretary Paul Murphy explains why he is backing Smith to be Labour's next leader.
