George Osborne today delivered his victory speech to party conference. His reception from activists may have been respectful rather than euphoric, but the chancellor's disciplined and politically smart speech demonstrated exactly why he is the current favourite to succeed David Cameron as the next Tory leader and prime minister. Journalists being shouted at and spat on during yesterday's anti-austerity protest at the Conservative party conference is just the latest example of the growing anger against the press. It comes from across the political divide, wether it's Ukip supporters, Corbynites, anti-war campaigners or Conservatives complaining of BBC bias. Whilst there is much to be critical of about the British media we suggest the way to fix it is not to succumb to conspiracy theories but to take a good look at media ownership and our own behaviours as reporters and readers. Elsewhere, we hear from the organisation StopWatch on the news that the Metropolitan police is to reverse cuts to stop and search. The group says the police will risk alienating the very communities they say they wish to engage with if they return to the bad old days of untargeted stop and search. |
