This morning we bring you the news that a legal case brought by politicians to challenge the blanket collection of citizens' electronic metadata has failed. Caroline Lucas, Jenny Jones and George Galloway believe that the surveillance breaches the so-called 'Wilson Doctrine" implemented by Harold Wilson but a tribunal has today ruled against them. Plus, we have a report from last night's meeting of the Trade union Co-ordinating Group in Parliament. Senior figures in the trade union movement pledged to break the law in order to defeat new anti-trade union legislation. As the House of Lords prepares to debate the criminal courts charge later today, we hear from the Howard League for Penal Reform on how the charge punishes the poor and why reform is needed. We also have a piece about cuts to English language courses for foreign nationals. The general secretary of the University and College Union (UCU) says there is a growing disconnect between what the government says about immigrants speaking English and what it does. And finally, we carry an article which suggests that left-wing moralising over the migrant crisis and bullying by the EU has made the case for immigration impossible. |
