What started as a rather ugly tactic by Zac Goldsmith's campaign to suggest Sadiq Khan has links to extremists, has now also been adopted by both the home secretary and the prime minister. But the attacks on the Labour candidate for mayor of London look to have backfired. Earlier this month Politics.co.uk revealed that Goldsmith himself had links to some of the same people the Conservatives are using to question Khan's judgement. Goldsmith has cited Khan's support of a campaign against the extradition of Babar Ahmad as an "example of concern" but today we report that Goldsmith repeatedly lobbied ministers over the very same case. Our story from yesterday about the decision by a legal committee that the student deportations judgement can not be cited in other appeals, appears to have ruffled a few feathers. Today we look at the signs of growing panic from the committee as lawyers launch a legal challenge which could blow the secrecy surrounding the case wide open. And finally, we have a piece which looks at the difficulties faced by benefit claimants who are looking for a property to rent. With some estate agents now refusing to let homes out to families on housing benefit combined with a massive shortage of social housing, this article suggests that the stigma surrounding welfare is leaving society's poorest people facing homelessness. |
