Independent monitoring boards are supposed to be a key part of the prison scrutiny system but just how effective are they? Our first piece today looks suggests that the treatment of a whistleblower who wrote a critical article about the boards highlights how they seem to reserve their fiercest criticism for those who speak out against them rather than the prisons they are supposed to be scrutinising.

Despite the attacks on Sadiq Khan coming thick and fast our next piece reports that the latest polls continue to show him way out ahead of his rivals. But as we examined earlier in the week those surrounding the Labour mayoral candidate remain nervous about the final outcome. Could a late onslaught from the Tory candidate Zac Goldsmith really be enough to turn opinion against the frontrunner?

And in the wake of the historic Hillsborough verdicts we hear from the Orgreave Truth and Justice campaign on why this week's developments give them hope that they may finally get some answers about the behaviour of South Yorkshire Police.
