You'd think that will all the polls showing Sadiq Khan way out ahead of Zac Goldsmith in the race for London mayor that his campaign team would be feeling rather relaxed about May's election. But our first piece today suggests that the hangover of Labour's general election defeat last year has left Labour activists feeling nervous of the outcome. Last night, the government voted to block an amendment to the immigration bill which would have seen 3,000 child refugees who are already in Europe brought to the UK. Our next piece highlights the reality now facing the children that Britain has turned its back on. We also look at whether the outcome of the vote would have been different if the 20 Labour MPs who failed to vote had turned up. Analysis by the Lib Dems whip's office suggests that a full Labour turn out could have seen the government defeated. This is all to do with something called 'pairing', a slightly obscure parliamentary technique. The piece received some criticism online, so our editor has launched a partial defence, if you want to follow along. And, think the EU referendum is all about economics and immigration? Our next article suggests not. It argues that remaining in the EU provides us a herd immunity to Putinism and that throwing it away could be a real security risk. |
