The death of Sandra Bland while in police custody in the US has hit the headlines in this country too. But why is there no outrage over our own black deaths in custody? Research from the Institute of Race Relations shows 509 BAME people have died in suspicious circumstances in custody since 1991. Elsewhere, we hear from Green MEP Keith Taylor about the situation in Calais. He says now more than ever the UK needs to work within a European-wide framework to ensure those in need of asylum are able to find it and at the same time address issues such as climate change and poverty. And finally, the psychoactive substances bill is not even law yet but Lambeth council is imposing a ban on substances with a capacity to stimulate or depress the central nervous system. Which we know includes almost anything. Just how enforceable this will be is anyone's guess. | |
