The figures appear to bear out the concerns of many that the combination of higher numbers of inmates and reduced staffing levels are causing a crisis in the prison service. Staying on the subject of prisons, we hear from a former prisoner who is warning that a possible smoking ban in prisons would be hell for inmates and staff. And elsewhere, we take a look at a decision by a police commissioner in Durham to no longer make cultivation of cannabis a priority for his force.
