Grayling's vanity We lead with three news stories today. First up is the news that the Ministry of Justice has admitted it is cancelling a much-criticised secure college project following wide-spread criticism of the plan. The announcement was sneaked out in a parliamentary answer to a Tory MP, with prisons minister Andrew Selous admitting it would "be a mistake to press ahead with such a development when resources are so tight". We also report on London debt-relief campaigners projecting a mock-up photo of Angela Merkel onto the German embassy last night, as news emerged that Syriza had effectively U-turned on its opposition to austerity. Despite an overwhelming vote of support in last week's referendum, Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras appeared to have substantially backed down in his confrontation with the Eurozone. The fallout from Wednesday's Budget also continues with a damning report from the Institute for Fiscal Studies. The independent watchdog found that Osborne's plans will overwhelmingly hit the poorest hardest and also questioned many of the measures, which it described as making "no economic sense". |
