Gove smells victory

After weeks in which it appeared the legal profession might be able to launch genuinely effective strike action over cuts to legal aid, everything appears to be falling apart. We report on widening fractures in the coalition standing up against the Ministry of Justice and Michael Gove. Will they be able to hold the line much longer?

We also have a report from the current legal challenge against the blanket surveillance undertaken by UK security services under the Tempora programme. The Investigatory Powers Tribunal heard evidence yesterday of widespread surveillance of communication between prisoners and their MPs as well as claims that serving prime ministers could have authorised surveillance of political opponents without disclosing it to Parliament. Read our full report from inside the court.

The race to replace Boris Johnson in City Hall is now well underway with the Greens also beginning their selection process. The Green Party have somewhat under-performed in London in recent years. With so many young and environmentally conscious people living here, the Greens need to reach out beyond their core supporters if they are ever going to become a major force in the capital and beyond. We hear from Green mayoral hopeful Tom Chance.
