Lots of firsts for Michael Gove this week. After a difficult Wednesday, in which he faced MPs as news emerged of a barristers strike, he gave his first speech on prisons this morning. Politics.co.uk was in attendance for what turned out to be a thoughtful and impressive bit of political sign-posting. The first policies are starting to dribble out and it looks like devolution and education are the orders of the day. As we note in our account of the speech, there are very powerful supporters of the status quo who Gove will eventually have to face down if he is serious about changing the system. But once again, the opening stages of his tenure at the the Ministry of Justice suggest great improvements are on the horizen after a very dark few years.
