Waving the white flag Under Ed Miliband, Labour were often accused of opposing the government for opposition's sake. When pressed, the party were usually forced to admit that while they opposed numerous government policies, they could not promise to reverse almost any of them. However, since Miliband's departure the party have sought to re-position themselves as "the responsible opposition". In order to do this, they appear to have gone to the opposite extreme. Pressed by journalists yesterday on which of the harsh austerity measures contained in Osborne's budget they opposed, Labour's shadow chancellor Chris Leslie struggled to think of any. From a party that once seemed to oppose everything, they now appear to be a party which opposes almost nothing. One of the measures which remains unopposed by Labour today, is Osborne's decision to press ahead with further cuts to housing benefit for young people. Today we take a look at exactly what that means for many of the people set to be hit by Osborne's latest round of cuts. |
