Well that was surprising. The Labour leadership race has been so dull for so long we almost forgot it was happening. Then at 10pm last night, a YouGov poll blew the whole thing open. It put Jeremy Corbyn streaks ahead of his rivals, on 43% of first preference votes, compared to 26% for Andy Burnham, 20% for Yvette Cooper and 11% for Liz Kendall. Tony Blair offered a largely meaningless speech in which he lashed out at the Labour left with a series of buzzwords which did not bear much scrutiny. Our analysis of the speech concluded that it is the fundamental vacuity of Blair's rhetoric which triggered such clamour for a candidate who speaks in plain terms about readily-understood ideas. Elsewhere, we looked beneath the surface of the European debate, with a new study finding that feelings of national pride decrease when the euro is introduced. Interestingly, a belief in redistribution of resources tends to increase. It's all in marked contrast to the toxic debate over Greece's loan repayments, but suggests the European project is still capable to producing extraordinary effects on the people within its borders. | |
