May speech makes it clear: We’re leaving the single market

"Good political leadership for me involves getting the big decisions right - however difficult, however controversial, however potentially divisive" - Charles Kennedy

After weeks of speculation over Theresa May's plans for leaving the EU, we now know that she intends to trigger Article 50 by the end of March next year, and it looks as if we're heading for a hard Brexit.

In her speech to the Conservative party conference yesterday, the prime minister signalled that Britain will leave the single market. In doing so, our first piece today suggests that she has set a goal which will devastate the British economy and that in years to come, this will be seen as one of the most disastrous speeches ever made by a prime minister.

She also announced proposals for untangling EU and UK law. Our next piece argues that the announcement is little more than admin and that anyone would have followed this model. It suggests the big issue now is how she'll actually do it.

And, we report that the Resolution Foundation's Torsten Bell has told a fringe meeting at the conference that it's now too late to solve the housing crisis for young people in the UK. He said the government needed to intervene in the housing market but that any solution was unlikely to come in time for the millennial generation.
