Ukip at war Nigel Farage is facing the biggest crisis of his leadership to date today, following his failure to win in South Thanet and his subsequent failure to stand down. Senior figures in the party are briefing heavily against him both in public and private. Farage is variously accused of being "thin-skinned", "abrasive", and the leader of a "personality cult". Thus far Farage's popularity within the party means he has survived many such criticisms in the past. However, his failure to win a parliamentary seat after his seventh attempt, has left him looking a much-reduced figure. He is likely to face questions about his future when he appears on BBC Question Time tonight. Could we now be entering the final days of Farage's time in politics? Elsewhere, the Labour leadership contest continues with the battle for who should be deputy leader beginning to take shape as well. Among the possible contenders is impressive young London MP Stella Creasy who is now being touted as a fresh new face within the party. Could she go all the way? |
