Chuka Can't

Shock in Westminster this morning after one of the leading favourites to become Labour's next leader has pulled out of the campaign citing personal reasons. Shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna is believed to have been unhappy with press attention focused on his friends and family members in recent days. Umunna was a narrow favourite with the bookies and was one of the candidates the Tories most feared coming up against. His sudden departure just a couple of days after launching his campaign for the top job, throws the race wide open. Expect more surprises to come.

It isn't gathering anything like the same attention as it's national counterpart, but Labour's race to be the next London mayor is already gathering pace. We've discovered that the leading candidates will appear for separate interviews tomorrow in front of the party's main union backers Unite. Their endorsement could make all the difference to which candidate wins the selection. The influence of the unions on both the mayoral and leadership race is set to be hugely controversial as the party seeks to move in a new direction following the departure of Ed Miliband.
