Is this the most inane law of all time?

"A good compromise, a good piece of legislation, is like a good sentence; or a good piece of music. Everybody can recognize it. They say, 'Huh. It works. It makes sense.'" - Barack Obama

It didn't take long. Just a few days into his new government David Cameron has unveiled another immigration bill. You may feel like you're experiencing deja-vu. Wasn't there just an Immigration Act passed the other day? Why, yes there was. But now there is another one, this time with the rather bizarre plan to make illegal immigration even more illegal.

The plans don't stand up to scrutiny, but the prime minister needed something to go with official figures showing immigration increasing this morning. Of course, that is mostly the result of a booming economy and one suspects the prime minister knows that. But this morning we went on a raid with Theresa May and then delivered the speech. He is also sticking to his 'tens of thousands' target, but has announced no new money for making it happen. One suspects that Cameron is again over-promising ahead of under-delivering - a pattern of messaging on immigration which does considerable damage to public trust on the issue.

We take an in-depth and critical look at the plans today, and update the mysterious story of Unite phone calls on Labour's mayoral candidate. Did they mention the name or didn't they? The plot thickens. Finally, we report on a damning inspection of a G4S-run prison, where children were subject to racist comments and staff went to work while under the influence of illegal drugs.
