With each day, the Labour leadership battle actually becomes less interesting. A telling speech from Tristram Hunt this morning saw the former shadow education secretary confirm he's not going to stand for the leadership and imply that Andy Burnham and Yvette Cooper are already starting to close the whole thing down. Both apparently have over 100 MPs supporting them, leaving only a few undecideds for other candidates to seduce in order to secure their 15% MP threshold. Hunt threw his weight behind Kendall, which might give her enough support to scrape over the finish line. That's far from sure, however. And if she does, it's possible she and Cooper will split each other's votes and let Burnham through. Affiliated trade unions will certainly be doing all they can to make that happen, with Unite throwing all its weight behind the former shadow health secretary. Over at the London mayoral election, there are also reports of a strong union effort to get their man - in this case Sadiq Khan - as Labour candidate. We report on that story today and also take a look at why crime is falling down voters' lists of concerns, with specialist analysis from Ipsos Mori. With rates falling, are we entering into a period of relative tranquility, where crime just isn't that important to people? | |
