The Labour case for legitimacy

"Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one" - Thomas Paine

As the election enters its closing stages, a subtle shift has taken place. Arguments are no longer just about winning the vote, they're also about who can be considered a legitimate prime minister after May 7th. The Tories - and the Tory press - are ramping up a PR machine saying Cameron is the only option. He'll likely have more seats and a Labour minority government would need the cooperation of the SNP to govern. But today we feature a piece making the alternate case - that as the polls stand it's Miliband who has the better case, because he can amass a range of centre-left forces to support his policy agenda. We also look at the secret crisis in the NHS, the need for electoral reform, and new research of search terms which suggests Labour is closing the gap with the Conservatives. Finally, we take an in-depth look at how the SNP surge happened and what it means to the future. Ingest with a generous lunch and a glass of crisp white wine. Enjoy the rest of your bank holiday.
