There can be no disputing that London's poorest residents have been hit hardest by Britain's housing crisis. Soaring rents, a lack of social housing, and cuts to benefits have led to councils shipping thousands of people out of the capital. Today we report on a family of four who have been living in a cramped bedsit in Welwyn Garden City for the past eighteen months, after being moved out of their borough. Elsewhere, a guard in an immigration detention centre writes anonymously for Politics.co.uk about his concerns over detaining people who have never committed a crime and why his job keeps him up at night. And, as the UK prepares to introduce plain cigarette packaging, we have a piece which looks at the evidence coming from Australia, and concludes that it isn't very convincing. |
