Class politics It's still very early days but the race for London mayor has already taken a very personal direction. First the Labour candidate Sadiq Khan, accused his Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith of "coded racist attacks" against him. Now Goldsmith supporters suspect Khan of trying to exploit envy and resentment about the Tory candidate's immense personal wealth. Today we take a look at the two candidates and ask whether class politics are going to play a big role in who becomes the next Mayor of London. Politics within the classroom, or at least within the lecture hall, has also been a big issue of late, with a growing row about whether a statue of controversial colonialist Cecil Rhodes should be pulled down at Oxford university. Critics of the campaign have accused students of trying to suppress free speech amid the ongoing debate about so-called 'safe spaces' at universities. Our piece argues that this debate misses the point about the statue, which has little to do with the right to free speech. |
