Since the September 11 attacks, Western governments have often sought to extend their powers to ensure greater national security, usually at the expense of civil liberties. So it was perhaps perfect timing then, that Shami Chakrabarti joined Liberty on September 10th 2001, just 24 hours before the tragic events that would change the world forever. In her 12 years as director of the organisation, she seemed to challenge every attack on civil liberties that the government of the day tried to make. As she steps down from her position, we have an interview with her about democracy, British patriotism, and what home secretaries are like in private. Elsewhere, we hear from Jane Fae on today's report into equality for transgender people, which found that "high levels of transphobia" remain in all areas of our society. Despite welcoming the report she points to her own experiences to argue that systemic prejudice will be hard to change. |
