Today we bring you a piece which highlights some of the bad news the government tried to bury on the last day of parliament before Christmas. Among the 36 statements and reports it sneaked out yesterday, there was a damning report on the bedroom tax, details of government special advisers and how much they cost and, news that court fees are to be increased.

Elsewhere, we have details of a speech delivered by Tom Watson this morning, on the need for open government. The deputy Labour leader discussed some of the ways he believes the Conservatives try to avoid accountability and called on the prime minister to stop governing from the shadows.
