Modern day slavery The UK's tied visa system, whereby migrant workers are forced to leave the country if they leave their employers, is forcing many domestic workers into a form of modern day slavery. A campaign to change the law has been taking to the streets of London, with little more than a few placards and some tourist bus tickets. Domestic worker, Marissa Begonia writes for us today on their inspiring campaign to free migrant workers. Elsewhere we take a look at the latest on the Tories' coming civil war over the European referendum. The government today offered a series of concessions to unruly backbenchers in an attempt to prevent all out bloodshed. Will any of it be enough? It doesn't look likely. We also take a look at the Labour leadership race, which formally began yesterday after the full list of MP nominations was published. Most of the coverage at the moment has focused on Jeremy Corbyn's entry into the race and on a rather idiotic 'Taliban' reference to Liz Kendall made by one of her rivals. But with all attention on the left-right battle between Kendall, Burnham and Corbyn, could we all be rather overlooking the growing support for Yvette Cooper. The full list of nominations published yesterday, suggests she is quietly scooping up support. Could Cooper's controversy-free, straight-down-the-middle campaign unexpectedly win the day? |
