With Labour so far behind both nationally and in Scotland, next year's London mayoral election could be their only real chance of a big political victory over the next five years.

But while Labour are doing better in London than elsewhere, victory is by no means assured. Of the last four mayoral elections, Labour have won just once. With the right candidate, this is an election the Tories could win again.

Many London Tories believe the person for the job is maverick Tory MP Zac Goldsmith. Bookies have reported a flurry of bets being made in the past week on his candidacy. Rumours of Goldsmith's mayoral bid have floated for years but his supporters have told Politics.co.uk that he is finally coming around to the idea. Labour's poor election results last month have strengthened the hand of those who believe Labour are beatable again in their London stronghold. Could Zac be the one to do it?

Elsewhere we take a look at the latest legal battle over the death of Charles de Menezes and investigate the resurrection of Maurice Saatchi's controversial 'medical innovation' bill.
