| | That was strange. For about two hours the Labour leadership race became very exciting. At one stage Jeremy Corbyn, the only left-wing candidate standing for nominations, needed to get the support of one MP every seven minutes if he was to hit the vital 35 mark by noon . It went down to the wire, with him still needing one with one minute to spare at 11:59am. But it happened. The Islington MP is on the ballot paper. Will he win? It's very unlikely, although commentators should perhaps tone down their confidence given the events of last month. But his presence on the ballot paper is a significant problem for Andy Burnham, who thought he could bank the left-wing of the party and then move himself rightward. That luxury is no longer his. Liz Kendall arguably benefits the most, as it may put the frighteners on the Blairites in the party. It is also a good thing for Labour, no matter what your allegiance, as it ensures a measure of genuine debate in the months ahead. Outside the leadership debate, we look at Boris' comments on male and female tears. Evidently he felt everyone desperately needed his take on the controversy over Nobel laureate Tim Hunt's comments about women in labs. Elsewhere we assess David Cameron's speech on Magna Carta today. It is a quite remarkable specimen. You'd have to look long and hard for a political speech with a bigger gap between rhetoric and reality. And on the subject of rhetorical gaps, we look at whether the UK's refugee programme could achieve more with a 'safe passage' initiative in the Med. Enjoy. | | Latest Articles On Jun 15, 2015 09:37 am The prime minister mentions four achievements of Magna Carta. He has challenged every single one of them.
