Charles Kennedy 1959 -2015

Most public figures receive positive obituaries, but there has been a particular warmth to the tributes paid to former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy this morning. Kennedy's friendly and generous nature meant that he was a widely liked figure both at Westminster and among the general public. However, it was perhaps his political judgement that he should be best remembered for. On all the big decisions of his career, from the war in Iraq, to the coalition with the Conservatives, history will judge Kennedy as having made the right and the brave call.

Elsewhere, we hear the case for reform of our voting system from a rather unlikely source - students at a Chinese university. For these students, the deeply disproportionate result in this year's general election was enough to put them off the idea of democracy altogether.
