National Small Business Week

In case you didn't already know, this is National Small Business Week. The Small Business Administration is holding festivities in Washington honoring top small businesses in several categories, companies are recognizing the occasion with discounts and contests, and even President Obama made an official proclamation.

Yippee! I guess.

Don't get me wrong. AllBusiness.com supports Small Business Week. Editor-at-Large Rieva Lesonsky is speaking at the event and covering it for us on her blog. On Friday, we'll publish an exclusive slideshow honoring the Small Business Champion Award winners.

It's just that special weeks and months and days too often do little more than highlight things that should be taken seriously all year long -- but aren't. That's why we have Secretaries Day -- we don't need a CEOs Day.

Small businesses need more than a special week. We need the support of government, the patronage of customers, and a level playing field against larger competitors. And those needs don't stop when the weekend comes.
